17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. ”No one is good—except God alone.19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. ”One thing you lack,” he said. ”Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

(Mark 10:17-22)

Key Verse

All honor and glory to God forever and ever! He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen.”

(1 Timothy 1:17)

Materials Needed: Paper (or journal) to write down prayer requests, a clear jar or vase, a tub of sand (can also be uncooked rice), a scoop or spoon for moving the sand, and one large rock.

Family Discussion

Whatever we value most or whatever we spend most of our time doing is usually the most important thing in our lives. We are going to do an activity called Jar of Importance. This activity will help us understand how each of our lives is like an empty jar waiting to be filled up, and it is our decision how we fill it.

Family Activity

The key to this activity is having the correct amount of sand (or rice) and a rock that is the right size. Ahead of time, find a rock that fills about half the jar. Then with the rock in the jar, fill the jar with sand (or rice). Now empty that sand (or rice) into a container and remove the rock. You are ready to get started.

While doing the activity, explain to your family how the sand (or rice) represents the things you like to do. The rock represents God. One at a time, have family members take turns filling up the jar with one scoop. As they do this, have them say the important thing that the scoop represents. Do this until all of the sand (or rice) has been poured into the jar. Then add the rock. If done correctly the rock will not fit all the way into the jar.

Now do the activity again, but start by putting the rock inside the jar first and then the sand (or rice). Everything should fit when you do the activity this time.

Jesus os like the rock we put into our jar. If He is the last thing we think of during our day, we usually won’t find time to fit Him into our busy schedule. But if we put Jesus first in our lives and spend time with Him first every day, then we will still get to the rest of our activities and He will be a part of the,m!

Family Prayer

Ask family members for prayer requests. Pray for them. Then ask God to help you keep Him the priority each day.

It is good to enjoy doing things we like to do, but by making God the first and most important thing in our lives, we can enjoy them even more!

(1 Timothy 1:17)

Materials Needed: A calendar, markers, crayons or pens, and paper (or journal) to write down prayer requests

Family Discussion

Going to church is one way we can keep God first and most important in our lives.

Let’s work on making God a priority by making a calendar and committing to going to church a certain number of weeks in a row!

Family Activity

Commit as a family to going to church for at least four weeks in a row. Create a family calendar that shows the days you will attend church. Place this in an area so that all members of the family can see it. Discuss how going to church shows that God is a priority in your life. If you attend church regularly, look back at your calendar to see the most weekends you attended church in a row. Commit to doubling those weeks.

Family Prayer

Ask family members for prayer requests. Then, ask God to help you keep your commitment to going to church.

Making a commitment to go to church regularly is a great step toward making God most important in our lives. Let’s put our family calendar somewhere we will see it often to remind us of our commitment.

According to Jesus, was the woman grateful or selfish when she served Him?

Like the woman in the Bible Story, we should have this same grateful attitude of service when we do things for other people. Who can you gratefully serve this week?

Imagine you are the woman at Bethany, serving Jesus, and you hear the people talking about the wrong things you had sone. How would you feel when Jesus stood up for you in front of others? Write down their names on a piece of paper (or journal if you are keeping one.) The next time you see them, pray and ask God for a chance to help them just like Jesus helped the sinful woman when He defended her. This could be as simple as sitting next to them at lunch or standing up for them whenever someone says something mean toward them.

In the Bible Story, what did the woman do to serve Jesus?

What was the nicest thing that anyone’s ever done for you?

When they did this for you how did that make you feel?

How do you think it made that person feel to do that thing for you?

Do you think if feels better to serve or be served? Why?

Can you tell me about a time when you served someone and it made you feel good?

Wrap Up

When we serve others we often experience as much joy as the person who received our service. What are things we can do for others this week so that we can experience the joy of serving? Let’s try to do a couple of these things this week. As we do, let’s think about how good it feels to know we are serving others.

36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. “Tell me, teacher,” he said.

41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,t and the other fifty.42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.

Family Discussion

In the Bible Story, what did the woman do to serve Jesus?

How did Jesus react to being served by the woman?

Can you tell me about a time when you served someone?

How did serving make you feel?

Who are some people you could be serving this week?

How could you be serving these people?

Lets make a list of the things we will do to serve others this week. At the end of the week, we’ll tell each other what we did.

Wrap Up

The woman in our story served Jesus. We should follow the woman’s example and serve others God has placed in our lives. Let’s pray right now that God will give us the desire to serve others.

(1 Peter 4:10)

Materials Needed: Several pieces of paper, a pen, 2 bowls or hats, and paper (or journal) to write down prayer requests

Family Discussion

To help us learn some ways we can serve others, we are going to play a game of Pictionary!

First we need to divide up into two teams. (If there are only three people, have one person be the one who always has to guess what is being drawn.) Now each team will work together to come up with some different ways we can serve others.

Family Activity

Have everyone write “I can serve by…” on some slips of paper. Then have everyone think of ways to serve someone else in the family. When they have come up with several ways to serve, have them write those on their slips of paper. Each person will randomly pick one paper from the other team’s bowl and try to draw the activity on the paper for his or her teammates to guess. This game may continue as long as you like.

Family Prayer

Ask family members for prayer requests. Then pray that God would provide you ways to serve this week.

Serving others can be a lot of fun! It often just takes time on our part to consider others’ needs and then act to fulfill those needs. Today we drew pictures of some ways we could serve others. Take one of the slips of paper from the game and serve someone by doing what is on the slip of paper. When you serve that person, you will be showing them God’s love.

(Luke 7:36-50)

Key Verse

God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.

(1 Peter 4:10)

Materials Needed: Index Cards, markers, crayons, or pens and paper (or journal) to write down prayer requests

Family Discussion

From the Bible Story in Luke 7, we learn that the sinful woman went out of her way to serve Jesus. We should be willing to do the same for others. One way we can serve others is by helping them when they need it.

Today we are going to make some Help Me cards to use this week.

When you give your Help Me card to one of us, we will serve you by helping you with whatever you need.

Family Activity

Gather around a table or on the floor and hand out an index card to each member of the family. have family members decorate the card any way they want, making sure they write “Help Me” somewhere on the card. Then, as a family, make a promise to honor the Help Me card whenever it is used this week.

Family Prayer

Ask family members for prayer requests. Then pray that God would help you serve each other this week
